This includes parties, parades, speeches, etc. But there's another event in June, National Great Outdoors Month. Which dates back to 1998 when then-President Bill Clinton started Great Outdoors Week. And in 2004, it was expanded from a week to a month. This was meant to give individuals, families, schools, etc. ample time to celebrate by hosting events or being outdoors and close to nature.

National Great Outdoors Month events

During National Great Outdoors Month, a variety of events, festivals, and activities are held across the country. From guided hikes and camping trips to wildlife tours and nature-themed workshops, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Below we list a selection of themed activities available in different places.

Minnesota

During National Great Outdoors Month, the DNR will offer special programs to encourage Minnesotans to get outdoors. These include June 9-11: Spend a weekend fishing for kids. Minnesotans age 16 or older who are fishing with children 15 or younger do not need a fishing license.

June 10: Free park day. Minnesotans get free admission to all 75 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.

June 10-11: No Registration Ride Weekend. Minnesotans who own an ATV registered for private or agricultural use can ride on public roads without paying a registration fee.

Austin, Texas

The event will be held at Patagonia, 316 Congress Ave. Tuesday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. There will be a one-hour panel discussion on diversity and inclusion in the outdoors. Members of the panel will share their experiences and insights.

The second event is Thursday, June 8, at 5 p.m. Refreshments and interactive activities will be followed by a 45-minute panel discussion on the benefits of the outdoors for youth development. Both events are free and open to the public. 

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Every summer, a week-long star party called the Grand Canyon star party is held here with interesting stargazing packages available at the surrounding inns and hotels. This year's party will be held from June 10th to the 17th. Each night features an outdoor evening program followed by telescope viewing in the large field behind the Visitor Center. Standard admission passes are available for $20 to $35.
