According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), people born after September 1, 1993, must complete a boater education course to operate a private boat with over 15 horsepower in Texas. Boating while intoxicated is illegal. If you are charged by the BWI for boating while intoxicated, this can result in jail time and fines.

All motorized vessels up to 115 feet in length and all non-motorized vessels 14 feet or longer must be registered with TPWD. All registrations are valid for two years. If you need to renew your registration, please do so online at the TPWD Renewal website. If you are registering a boat for the first time, you will need to visit one of the TPWD offices in Texas to register.
